Things That Are Long | Art Opening
GALLERY | MUSIC | $5 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | Things That Are Long showcases the Master of Fine Art in Studio Art thesis exhibition of Frankie Gutierrez, a California State University, San Bernardino graduate student. Named after their latest illustrated picture book, THINGS THAT ARE LONG a book of long things, Frankie plays with queer aesthetics, food comparisons to the body, and illustrates trans bodies in new and hairier ways. Drawing from personal experience and the broader discussion of transness, Frankie explores his own transition, and the non-mainstream trans identities through illustrations, prints, large-scale murals, and short animated films.
Frankie Gutierrez is an illustrator and printmaker working within the Inland Empire's print and self-publishing book art communities. Utilizing bright colors and silly faces, they endeavor to highlight the playful nature of gender fluidity, and non-mainstream trans identities. Their work consists primarily of woodcut and litho prints, focusing on the process-heavy technical aspect of printing, relating the act of printing to queer labor and labor-intensive art-making practices for maximalist design. Using found objects and old clunky frames, they reimagine the world with fuzzy lines, neon colors, texture, pattern, and form for funky and intriguing characters who look like you and me, and no one at all.

You’re Gonna Love This Jump Scare Book Launches
POETRY | $7 | 18+ | Join authors Daniel Zomparelli and Dina Del Bucchia to help launch their latest books. A night of poetry, comedy and trivia. With special guests, Ali Liebegott, Ryan O’Connell and Annie Paradis. Hosted by Gabe Liedman.
You’re Gonna Love This tracks the narrator’s entwined relationships with her spouse, her television, and herself. Displaying Del Bucchia’s trademark nuanced media literacy, this distinctly working-class long poem unravels how media culture’s around-the-clock presence impacts our connection to the world. Recapping episodes in her experience of caregiving, she also addresses her own mental-health journey with dark humour, wry cultural references, and a flair for making the deeply personal especially relatable. You’re gonna love this!
At once raw and skillful, painful and funny, personal and pervasive, the poems in Jump Scare dig deep into mental health, neurodivergence, grief, dreams, monstrosity, sexuality, pop culture, queer consumer culture, and the commodification of identity. This is a book that tackles isolation and loss head-on and thinks hard and with wry humour about how to position ourselves in this lonely, scary, compelling world.

Insula Collective BIPOC Support Group
COMMUNITY | FREE | ALL AGES | Welcome to Insula Collective, a haven inspired by the essence of Moses Sumney's 'Grae' album, where the resonant concept of "insula" finds its home. In Latin, insula translates to island—a metaphor for the isolation that shadows many of our lives. Our personal journeys have unveiled the profound impacts of isolation on mental well-being, giving rise to heightened feelings of dissociation, loneliness, shame, and depression. At Insula Collective, we recognize the delicate interplay between self and others amidst isolation and firmly believe in the transformative power of community.
Our story unfolds with a deep acknowledgment of the necessity for supportive spaces dedicated to mental health within the black community. Drawing strength from personal experiences, we've witnessed the immeasurable value of such spaces, where individuals discover acceptance, understanding, and a collective path towards wellness. Insula Collective is passionately committed to expanding these spaces, cultivating a community that embraces vulnerability, recognizing it as a potent tool for holistic well-being.
Life's challenges may seem formidable, but at Insula Collective, we stand as a steadfast support beacon. Our dedication to accessibility shines through in our donation-based support groups, embracing a pay-what-you-can model. Tailored for the BIPOC community and proudly standing as allies to the queer community, we've eradicated judgment and stigma from our doors. Join us as we rediscover the strength in unity, overcoming life's struggles together. At Insula Collective, acceptance knows no bounds—welcome back to a community where you belong.
About Briana Boyd — Mental Health Advocate and Certified Peer Support Specialist
Navigating the complexities of severe, treatment-resistant depression and various mental health diagnoses, I've been fortunate to access crucial resources and receive unwavering support from my mother. The profound impact of losing my father and uncle to suicide has shaped my worldview, sparking a deep commitment to suicide prevention.
These personal struggles have illuminated the stark disparities within the mental health care system, particularly for individuals in the black community. This recognition fuels my dedication to fostering greater wellness and building a supportive mental health community tailored to those who have often been underserved.
In 2022, my transformative experience with group therapy, specifically designed for people of color, inspired me to become a certified peer support specialist in California. This certification empowers me to bridge gaps in care, offering support and understanding to those who may have felt overlooked in the mental health landscape.
My mission is to break down barriers hindering mental health care within the BIPOC community, advocating for greater accessibility and inclusivity. By sharing my journey and becoming a certified peer support specialist, I aspire to create spaces where individuals can find solace, share their experiences, and collectively journey toward holistic well-being. Join me in cultivating a supportive environment that encourages growth, healing, and empowerment.

WORKSHOP | $10 // $100 | 16+ | Queer Qwerty Event! Come join us for a Mechanical Keyboard Making Class! It's a computer keyboard - but THINK: "ANALOG" - something between the thin Mac keyboards and old-school typewriters.

Whether you are a WFM warrior, aspiring writer, or coder, we want to connect people with a new hobby, skill, and/or confidence to "tinker around." We will introduce you to the tactile feeling of keycaps, the "clicky" or "creamy" ASMR sounds, what "RGB" is, and other customizations.
This event is sponsored by DangKeebs, Monsgeek, and Custom NovelKeys so that you can take home a fully-built keyboard for half the price of purchasing it on your own! Limited spots will also be available for learning only (no take home keyboard).

Insula Collective BIPOC Support Group (Copy)

Art Club Natural Dying Workshop with Ángel
ARTIST WORKSHOP | SLIDING SCALE $10-$20 | ALL AGES | Have you wanted to refresh your wardrobe? Learn how to upcycle your clothing through natural dyeing by creating a one of a kind design. In this beginner friendly hands on workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn about the history of plants and fiber arts as well as be able to experiment with the practice of natural dyeing. We will go through the process of preparing the cloth to the finishing technique so that you are prepared to practice this at home or in your neighborhood. Participants are invited to bring a plain colored fabric preferably cotton or silk to contribute to the dye bath.
Sliding scale pricing is a tool for social equity. We use sliding scale pricing to make art education accessible and affordable to all.
There are three tiers for pricing, when signing up for a workshop, please pay on the scale what feels right to you and your current finances. This is a trust based system, only you will know what feels comfortable and possible.
The high end of the scale is the true cost. If you are someone who can afford to pay this, please do, as this offsets the price for others, allowing us to create more affordable offerings.
There are a set amount of spaces available per tier to ensure that the scale is balanced and workshop costs are covered. If a tier is sold out it means that all those spots have been spoken for.
