ART OPENING | $5 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | Arantza Pena Popo has a habit of walking alone at night. Both precarious and cathartic, she thinks about how seamless her body dissolves into the dark. In the daytime, Arantza feels hypervisible, but at night, it takes a careful eye to distinguish her from the shadows.
“The World Is Looking for You” explores Arantza’s relationship with the nighttime — one that tiptoes the line between safety and harm. The exhibition explores three different comic narratives that mirror three different themes — the chaotic, the erotic, and the hypnotic. A woman who lives in a light-polluted city who is sexually attracted to stars, a girl walks home alone at night, and a girl's journey through a frat party as she negotiates male desire, sexist rites of passage, and Bad Bunny.
Each narrative sharing a throughline: our own darkness embraced by the warm cloak of night.
Arantza Pena Popo is an Ignatz Award Nominated Colombian-born and Los Angeles-based artist who explores slice-of-life narratives through her comic artwork. You can find her playing bass in the dark, listening to too much Mitski, and enthusiastically ranting about Damien Hirst. She is also the National Winner of the Doodle for Google Contest in 2019.
