Puro Tranquilo, Puro Sereno | Art Opening

GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | “Puro Tranquilo, Puro Sereno” is a love letter to El Sereno, the neighborhood that shaped solo exhibiting artist, Sebastian Schiff. With our rolling hills and tight knit community, El Sereno truly embodies its name, which translates to The Tranquil or The Serene. Through ceramic sculptures, Sebastian honors the spaces that define his community—the local taco truck, the corner store, and the everyday landmarks that hold the weight of history, memory, and identity.

Within these depictions of place and community, the artist also explores the people who call it home, including himself. His work reflects on masculinity, love, tradition, and mental health—on coping, healing, and the push and pull between holding on and letting go. In clay, he preserves the resilience of his people, the moments that shaped him, and the ever-changing nature of home at threat of gentrification and the erasure of community.

This exhibition is an act of remembrance and rebirth—a meditation on belonging, growth, and the deep connection between community and self.

Sebastian is a Mexican-American, self-taught ceramic artist born in Los Angeles, driven by a deep connection to the earth and a passion for the tactile process of working with clay. For him, ceramics is not just a craft—it is a therapeutic practice that allows expression of personal journey, exploring themes of growth, nature, plants, and community, and connecting with the world. His work is inspired by lived experiences, dreams, city, culture, and the natural world, with each piece reflecting an intimate relationship with the material and the earth. His work blends functional and artistic elements, is rooted in a desire to create objects that not only serve a purpose but also invite contemplation and connection. Teaching others is a natural extension of his practice—sharing the joy, healing, and fulfillment he finds in ceramics with others has become a vital part of my creative journey.

Sliding scale pricing is a tool for social equity. We use sliding scale pricing to make ceramics education accessible and affordable to all. There are three tiers for pricing, when signing up for a workshop, please pay on the scale what feels right to you and your current finances. This is a trust based system, only you will know what feels comfortable and possible.

The high end of the scale is the true cost. If you are someone who can afford to pay this, please do, as this offsets the price for others, allowing us to create more affordable offerings. There are a set amount of spaces available per tier to ensure that the scale is balanced and workshop costs are covered. If a tier is sold out it means that all those spots have been spoken for.

We do our best to ensure workshops are accessible and affordable. We are continuously improving our pricing system, please reach out if you have any questions or ideas you'd like to share.

Club Gay Gardens | April 2025

WORKSHOP | FREE | ALL AGES | Garden with us! On the last Sunday of every month our besties Maggie Smart-McCabe and Linnea Torres lead a workshop/volunteer session actively tending to our Native Garden. Learn about plants native to southern California, how to care for them, and meet other cuties while helping sustain our very own Junior High garden!

Bring your own water bottle and snacks. All are welcome! Absolutely no experience necessary.

We also HIGHLY recommend hats + SPF to stay safe from the sun.

Maggie Smart-McCabe has experience working in climate appropriate gardens that prioritize native plants, regenerative gardening, and building soil health. They are passionate about increasing access to green spaces where people can get hands-on experience connecting to land and plants in their own community. Maggie loves gardening and learning in community spaces, and they are super excited to show plants some love with other queer folks at the Junior High Native Plant Garden!

Linnea Torres is a photographer and has been gardening for two years, after leaving the life of 35mm. A self-proclaimed master of container gardening, Linnea focuses on her tiny patio in her tiny space. Her tiny patio is home to edible annuals, perennial pollinators, veggies + fruits, the odd succulent, and cut flowers to gift to friends. Her focus has just shifted to growing art. Linnea is excited to share DIY tips for gardening as well as a deep appreciation for growing your own food. Let’s learn together y’all!

Cell Rememory | Art Opening

GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | In this series of densely hand-quilted fabric paintings, Udita Upadhyaya investigates her lineage (including the absence of and possible rupture) between craft, language, and storytelling. Engaging intimately with found and worn fabrics, sourced from her grandmother’s tailor in Mumbai, Upadhyaya simultaneously makes room for nagging grief and spontaneous bursts of joy. Her process ranges from slow and meditative stitching to energetic color ways and fervent writing.

The text and textile works attend to intergenerational longing and disconnection. Her body and its stories are at the center of the quilts. Her objects are surrogate bodies, allowing themselves to be held and providing holding. They explore personal and collective histories, bringing to the forefront both circular memories and illegible, innate stories.

Udita Upadhyaya is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and full spectrum birthworker,  She obtained her Masters in Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she has also lectured. Her work spans live art, devised theatre, performative photographs, sculpture, installation, video, writing, text, and fiber arts.

Upadhyaya’s practice is rooted in the wisdom of the body. It is built by asking piercing questions and engaging in deep listening in pursuit of intimacy and connection. Her artistic explorations include a study of global cultures and an uncovering of personal and collective histories, ignited by the passion to transcend cultural, social and gender binaries. Upadhyaya has performed and exhibited work at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago, Smart Museum of Art, Hyde Park Art Center, Villa Teresa Decorative Arts Museum, and Links Hall. Her artist book of scores, nevernotmusic, was acquired by the Joan Flash Artist Book Collection, and University of Chicago’s Rare Books Collection, among others. Upadhyaya’s work has been written about in publications such as Chicago Reader, Hyperallergic, Art India, Art Asia Pacific and more. Upadhyaya lives and works between Chicago and Los Angeles.
