Tattooing for Beginners with Stabalisim | February

WORKSHOP | $250 // $300 | 18+ | Ever wanted to learn the art of tattooing? Junior High resident artist JJ wants to show you the ropes! In this workshop we’re disrupting abusive tattoo apprenticeship traditions and breaking down the culture of gatekeeping in tattooing by allowing interested artists to experiment on fake skin.

When you purchase a ticket all supplies are included, you get to keep stencil with your designs, your fake skin, and a few more single use items! Pay $250 if you have your own tattoo machine, pay $300 if you want to borrow a machine for the workshop.

Class prep: Bring a few (2-5) designs that you drew or found online that you want to tattoo at the class. Bring the designs on printer paper, your phone/iPad, or whatever you have access to! We start by going over the drawing and stencil process then JJ will demonstrate setting up a tattoo machine and tattooing on fake skin. JJ will have a station for each attendee and will guide you through the whole tattooing process. Hopefully you’ll be able to fill your whole sheet of fake skin!

Class pricing: Make sure you choose the right option for you

Bringing your own machine? $250

RETURNING STUDENT (Must have taken at least 1 class with JJ)

WORKSHOP | FREE | ALL AGES | Garden with us! On the last Sunday of every month our besties Maggie Smart-McCabe and Linnea Torres lead a workshop/volunteer session actively tending to our Native Garden. Bring your own water bottle and snacks. All are welcome! Absolutely no experience necessary.

We also HIGHLY recommend hats + SPF to stay safe from the sun.

Maggie Smart-McCabe has experience working in climate appropriate gardens that prioritize native plants, regenerative gardening, and building soil health. They are passionate about increasing access to green spaces where people can get hands-on experience connecting to land and plants in their own community. Maggie loves gardening and learning in community spaces, and they are super excited to show plants some love with other queer folks at the Junior High Native Plant Garden!

Postcards to the Afterlife: An Ancestral Poetry Workshop

WORKSHOP | $18 | 18+ | This winter, take time to honor your ancestors and reconnect with your roots through poetry. In this intimate workshop, we’ll explore epistolary poems and writing letters to the dead, weaving together themes of ancestral lineage, cultural heritage, and spirituality. Learn to hold grief with intention and transform it into a powerful act of ancestral veneration.

Born and raised by Greek and Guatemalan immigrants, Ariadne Makridakis Arroyo (she/they) is a Los Angeles-based poet, writer, arts administrator, and feminista who grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her work has been featured in Latin@ Literatures, Tasteful Rude, and Acentos Review, among others. In 2023, they underwent a speculative fiction fellowship with Roots. Wounds. Words. and have been named the 2025 LGBTQIA+ residency fellow with The Sundress Academy for the Arts. Currently, Ariadne’s work centers queer, feminist, and Latine perspectives in a way that explores the crossroads of radical joy, sexuality, brujería, and ancestral healing.

Cell Rememory | Art Opening

GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | In this series of densely hand-quilted fabric paintings, Udita Upadhyaya investigates her lineage (including the absence of and possible rupture) between craft, language, and storytelling. Engaging intimately with found and worn fabrics, sourced from her grandmother’s tailor in Mumbai, Upadhyaya simultaneously makes room for nagging grief and spontaneous bursts of joy. Her process ranges from slow and meditative stitching to energetic color ways and fervent writing.

The text and textile works attend to intergenerational longing and disconnection. Her body and its stories are at the center of the quilts. Her objects are surrogate bodies, allowing themselves to be held and providing holding. They explore personal and collective histories, bringing to the forefront both circular memories and illegible, innate stories.

Udita Upadhyaya is an interdisciplinary artist, educator, and full spectrum birthworker,  She obtained her Masters in Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where she has also lectured. Her work spans live art, devised theatre, performative photographs, sculpture, installation, video, writing, text, and fiber arts.

Upadhyaya’s practice is rooted in the wisdom of the body. It is built by asking piercing questions and engaging in deep listening in pursuit of intimacy and connection. Her artistic explorations include a study of global cultures and an uncovering of personal and collective histories, ignited by the passion to transcend cultural, social and gender binaries. Upadhyaya has performed and exhibited work at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago, Smart Museum of Art, Hyde Park Art Center, Villa Teresa Decorative Arts Museum, and Links Hall. Her artist book of scores, nevernotmusic, was acquired by the Joan Flash Artist Book Collection, and University of Chicago’s Rare Books Collection, among others. Upadhyaya’s work has been written about in publications such as Chicago Reader, Hyperallergic, Art India, Art Asia Pacific and more. Upadhyaya lives and works between Chicago and Los Angeles.

Slow dance with your boo or scream sing with your besties, shop accessories and trinkets perfect for any Galentine’s or Valentine’s present, or just spend your Wednesday evening with Junior High at the Echo!

Junior High’s Talent Show is not an open mic night. This is a curated night of music and community assembled by Junior High’s very own Eden Hain. Each month, Talent Show will cultivate a space highlighting the best up and coming musicians in Los Angeles. You can look forward to seeing a new selection of our favorite underground music made by artists we wish had more (or any!) radio play. As is central to Junior High’s ethos, Talent Show prioritizes the expression of individuals marginalized by white supremacy and heteropatriarchy including but not limited to women and QTBIPOC communities. Most of all, we're excited to create another safe space for artists to convene and create together!

Tattooing for Beginners with stabalisim

You must pre-order your ticket in advance, no tickets will be sold at the door.
