Exhibition Opening | KINFOLK by Christina Erives

GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | Christina Erives’ work is rooted in the language of folk art—where storytelling, tradition, and daily life meet through the handmade. She is drawn to the quiet power of objects shaped by hand, carrying marks, symbols, and gestures that feel both personal and shared.

She understands kinfolk as more than family—it includes all those connected through making, sharing, and remembering. The people she comes from and those she finds along the way. Each piece becomes a vessel for connection, holding stories that are both intimate and collective.

Working primarily in clay, she explores the balance between function and narrative. Surfaces are carved, glazed, and layered with imagery that echoes folk motifs, reinterpreted through her own visual language.

At its core, her practice honors making as a form of remembering—an offering to the past, a reflection of the present, and a gesture toward the future—where art continues to connect us to our kin, our communities, and the enduring thread of shared imagination.

Christina Erives was born in Los Angeles, California. She received her BA and MA from California State University of Northridge and her MFA from Pennsylvania State University. She has worked as a Resident Artist at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena Montana, Belger Craneyard Studios in Kansas City Missouri, Arquetopia in Puebla Mexico, and Rasquache in Puebla Mexico. She has also worked as a Visiting Artist Instructor at New Mexico State University and the University of Montana. Christina Erives is an emerging artist in the field of Ceramics. In 2017 she received an Emerging Artist Award from NCECA the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts.

Ceramics as material has permanence , it is one of the ways we were able to learn about ancient cultures. There is so much beauty in these traditions and Christina Erives’ aim has been to make a mark of her time that will be preserved in the history of ceramic objects.

Junior High Book Club | May

COMMUNITY | FREE | ALL AGES | We're throwing it back to bring us forward. The ancestors gave us invaluable tools for us current organizers, but it's up to us to make sure they're adapted to these times. Similarly, it's our obligation to ensure the seeds we plant come to fruition for future generations, even if we aren't around to watch them bloom. In THE NOSTALGIC FUTURES BOOK CLUB — facilitated by Xueyou Wang (she/they) & Ray Carroll (they/them) — we explore a variety of literature — fiction, poetry, theory, memoir, and more — that asks us what part of our collective histories are worth carrying forward, and what change is required for a liberated future.

Origami Ghosts and po mia and TheyBoy

MUSIC | $10 | ALL AGES | This is a call to enthusiasts of emerging indie artists and songwriters. A journey from rap, to folk, to rock? How punk!!! Witness these up and coming musicians at Junior High and you will be treated to a magical night of warm and cozy music.

“po mia” is an eclectic, up-and-coming singer/songwriter based in St. Louis, MO. They are best known for their versatility of musical styles, colorful stylistic expression, as well as their ability to engage a crowd through their lyricism and captivating performances. Coming from a music therapy educational background, po mia’s musical works often tackle themes of identity, love, fear, and navigating real life experiences.

Los Angeles indie rock outfit Origami Ghosts’ newest folky jangle-pop album A Fine Time to Talk About Nothing embraces the punk rock spirit with a childlike glee. “[Origami Ghosts live show is] entertaining, energetic, experimental music – think Frank Zappa meets Jonathan Richmond. It’s poppy with a punk ethos, independent and interesting.” Liz MacDonald, Monterey County Weekly.

Non-binary rapper “TheyBoy” ruminates on love, queerness, and mental health in their alternative hiphop flows on this bedroom rap project.

Come embrace some beautiful yet widely undiscovered gems at Junior High!!!

POSTPONED: Frame Loom Weaving | DIY Wall Hanging

WORKSHOP | THREE WEEK SERIES | $150 | ALL AGES | Weaving is a calming and meditative practice. The loom is a place to unwind your tangles, imagine, and remember. It's fun to play with colors, texture, and shapes. The steady pace allows your mind to slow down to where you can look at your thoughts happening instead of feeling like they are rushing by. If you feel like you are flooded with input and would like a gentle practice to calm your mind and make your hands happy, weaving is for you! Learn the basic principles of weaving, such as warping the loom, stitch techniques, how to change colors and add texture.

All materials for your project will be included, but feel free to bring your own yarn or supplies to play with. At the end of 3 sessions you will be able to take home your woven wall hanging, placemat, or patch.

1st week: Monday, May 4th
introduction, warp the loom, basic stitches, ideas for projects, and plan your design.

2nd week: Monday, May 11th
guided practice.

3rd week: Monday May 18th
continued practice, complete your projects, prepare your piece to be tied off, hung, or stitched.

COVID-19 vaccinations are highly recommended to attend events at Junior High. Learn more here.

This event will be indoors.
