Clay Date! | Feeling with Clay

GUEST ARTIST WORKSHOP | $35 | AGES 16+ | Join emerging artist, Christina Joseph, in this hands on ceramics workshop! The class will begin with a guided meditation, using the clay as a modality for sensing and navigating time and space through meditation. From there, we will use our clay experiments as tools for observation, either working directly with the object itself or allowing it to become a point of departure for another investigation. The goal is to observe the clay and respond to what it is doing, rather than prescribing an immediate endpoint. Marks, fingerprints, and indents will become our pathways into the creation as we utilize the healing essence and historical depth of clay as our playground.

Great for those who are looking for access to ceramics, clay friends, or sharpening your skill set! No experience necessary. No reservations necessary to attend Clay Date. You are welcome to purchase your ticket ahead of time or at the door day-of the event.

If you opt to fire your work, you will receive an email once your pots have been fired and are ready to pick up. You can pick up your pieces on Mondays 12-6pm or at any Clay Date. Everyone will have up to three months to pick up their pots- after which we will have to dispose of them to make space for new class work!

Christina Joseph is from Los Angeles, CA (b. 1990). She grew up in Southern California studying painting and drawing from a young age. She attended college at  Maryland Institute College of Art where she learned ceramics, performance art, and installation and graduated with a BFA in sculpture. After graduating, Christina became involved in the art scene in Baltimore both with local galleries and community outreach. Despite growing up in Los Angeles, Joseph is highly influenced by her southern roots, often channeling the work to address difficult histories and their intersection with the world today. She is currently working towards her MFA from UC Irvine.

Mixed Materials Presents: An Evening with Faces

COMMUNITY | $15 | 18+ | Faces is a short narrative film following an engaged couple seemingly living a happy life in LA on the fringes of major success in the entertainment industry. Their relationship is thrown into question when a chance encounter with a classmate leads to sexual assault accusations for the future groom.

Written, directed, and produced by Jasmine Siddall, Faces is a short drama film exploring intimate relationships, memory, accountability, the lasting impact of violence and sexual assault; the film asks what happens when the person you love is accused of something unthinkable.

Join Mixed Materials for an evening in support of Faces. Enjoy food and drinks, a live reading from the screenplay, a silent auction, and a conversation with the filmmakers. Meet fellow artists, connect with organizations doing important work throughout Los Angeles, and help bring Faces to life. All proceeds from the evening directly support the production of the film.

Mixed Materials is a multidisciplinary creative studio working across film production, curation, the archives and public programming. We produce original films alongside exhibitions, screenings, and live events that celebrate cinema and fine art while creating opportunities to engage with overlooked works, emerging artists, and new ideas.

Junior High Book Club | August

COMMUNITY | FREE | ALL AGES | We're throwing it back to bring us forward. The ancestors gave us invaluable tools for us current organizers, but it's up to us to make sure they're adapted to these times. Similarly, it's our obligation to ensure the seeds we plant come to fruition for future generations, even if we aren't around to watch them bloom. In THE NOSTALGIC FUTURES BOOK CLUB — facilitated by Xueyou Wang (she/they) & Ray Carroll (they/them) — we explore a variety of literature — fiction, poetry, theory, memoir, and more — that asks us what part of our collective histories are worth carrying forward, and what change is required for a liberated future.

Get this month’s reading selection and sign up for Book Club emails here.

I’m Not A Screening

COMMUNITY | $15 | 18+ (film rated R) | Help the cast and crew of mixed-media short film “Peta Joy In...I’m Not A Lesbian” fundraise for their next project with a screening and Q&A with the film’s core creatives, accompanied by live music and vendors.
Nightwear dress code encouraged––from harnesses to slip dresses to sweatpants, come in your comfiest or sexiest pajamas (within reason)!

Arrive before the lights dim for a live performance by indie rock band Don’t Say Bye, get a tarot reading by Alex Aug, shop the closet of Maresa Smith, pieces by queer tie dye artist Petunia Bones, artwork by Knives, and grab an issue of LA-student-run fashion and culture magazine Strike.
Stay after the credits roll for an open discussion about the challenges and benefits of low-budget indie production with director and animator Kaia Ross (@psykaiatry), producer Matthew Yepiz (@matthewmakesmovies), and lead actress and costume designer Peta Jolly (@petajoyjolly).

“I’m Not A Lesbian” follows Peta Joy as she gets the ick from her mediocre boyfriend and escapes into homoerotic friendships while refusing to admit she’s a lesbian, blind to the fact that her boyfriend is cheating on her with men. Blending live-action with hand-drawn 2D animation, it satirizes arthouse films and compulsive heteronormativity, wrapped in old Hollywood camp and frilly femininity. “I’m Not A Lesbian” is Kaia Ross’ debut short film, cost $160 to create, was filmed guerilla in one day with a predominantly-queer skeleton crew of 13, and serves as a proof-of-concept for her next short, queer revenge comedy “I Need To Kill My DL Trade.”

Dress to the nines––we love going all out!

Exhibition Opening | Stampede by Christina Joseph

GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | Stampede was a term first coined in an 1847 Cincinnati newspaper to describe mass escapes of enslaved people from the American South. The “Grand Stampede” marked a critical period in America’s metamorphosis, right before the Civil War, when the country was brought to its knees in reckoning.

Stampede is a visual survey of the ever-moving kaleidoscope of systems of labor, building, and destruction. Artist Christina Joseph created this body of work inspired by her research on the Underground Railroad in and around her family’s inn in Maysville, Kentucky. From this research, emerged a clearly sophisticated network written into the walls, basements, and crawl spaces illuminating the stories that are stitched together through ancestral whispers, lore, and corrupted nineteenth-century documents. Stampede considers the force of movement that hinges on the power of mass necessary to initiate the momentum. The work examines the systems we run from, the systems we build, and the spaces of ambiguity that exist between them. Lest we forget.

Christina Joseph was born in Los Angeles, October of 1990. She grew up in Southern California studying painting and drawing from a young age. She attended college at Maryland Institute College of Art where she learned ceramics, performance art, and installation. She graduated in 2012 with a BFA in sculpture with concentrations in ceramics and curatorial studies. After graduating, Christina became involved in the art scene in Baltimore both with local galleries and community outreach. For years after graduating college, Joseph focused primarily on her performative works, performing at Baltimore’s Light City, Fields Fest, and other local galleries and events. Joseph moved back to Los Angeles in 2017 and works primarily with ceramics to address themes of identity, history, beauty, and labor. Joseph is currently pursuing her MFA from UC Irvine.

Creative Practice: A Legal Salon for Artist

COMMUNITY | LIMITED RSVP REQUIRED | 21+ | Inspired by the long tradition of the salon as a space for interdisciplinary dialogue, Creative Practice is an informal gathering hosted by California Lawyers for the Arts centered on the realities of building and sustaining an artistic life. The vitality of artistic practice depends not only on creative vision, but on access to knowledge, supportive infrastructures, and communities of care. This salon creates space for conversation around the legal, professional, and everyday realities of making art while encouraging solidarity, shared learning, and collective inquiry.

Artists of all disciplines are welcome. We especially encourage BIPOC artists, LGBTQIA2S+ artists,  immigrant artists, disabled artists, emerging creatives, and others who have historically faced barriers to legal and professional support to join us. Bring a question (or simply your curiosity) and join an afternoon of dialogue exploring the legal, social, and material conditions of creative life while learning about the resources available through California Lawyers for the Arts and a broader community of advocates, attorneys, and activists.

Junior High Book Club | September

COMMUNITY | FREE | ALL AGES | We're throwing it back to bring us forward. The ancestors gave us invaluable tools for us current organizers, but it's up to us to make sure they're adapted to these times.

Group Exhibition Opening | One More For All My True Friends

GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | This multimedia collection of work was put together by (mostly) recent graduates of a high school for the arts in Los Angeles.

The group of artists has appeared in different combinations at art exhibitions at Plaza de la Rasa, film screenings at Vidiots, jazz concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, and punk shows at The Smell. After scoring each others’ movies, photographing each others’ gigs, modeling each others’ clothing, and pulling all-nighters together, they invite friends, family, and the community to one last group show before many of them journey beyond high school.

In the face of an oppressive world where peoples’ rights and voices are being stripped away, they strive to find hope through art. Touching on the harmful effects of unrealistic expectations, attraction, and deception, and the joy found in community, this group of artists explores the depths of human emotion and connection.

And although many of the contributors are moving—across state lines, continents, or further into our careers—they will continue to grow, be inspired by each other, and celebrate the friendships that have been.

Kuma Enomoto is an animator, filmmaker, and musician.

Marilyn Garcia is a painter, photographer, and mixed-media artist.

Filomena Leimone is a painter and filmmaker.

Santiago Orellana is a filmmaker, photographer, and dancer.

Lucia Penick is a painter and curator.

Eloise Wong is a visual artist, musician, and curator.

This show will conclude with musical performances by Thank You Town and Astatine on September 6th, 2026.

Writing the Women We Were Warned About: Monstrous Feminine and Superstition in Poetry

WORKSHOP | $25 | 18+ | Superstitions shape the way we learn about danger, identity, and belonging, but they also tell us who we’re allowed to be. In this generative poetry workshop, we’ll explore the stories and sayings we grew up with: from playful warnings to cultural myths meant to guide or socially condition us. We’ll focus on Latin American monstrous women like La Siguanaba and La Ciguapa, specifically on their folklore and their defiance of gender expectations. What happens when you become the woman you’ve been warned about?

Through close readings and discussion of poems by Elizabeth Acevedo, Ashley August, and Leticia Hernández Linares, we’ll examine how poets reclaim superstition and myth as sources of power, creativity, and cultural memory.

Participants will be guided through writing prompts that reimagine or retell a superstition, myth, or warning from their own background. All levels, identities, and cultural traditions are welcome!

About the facilitator: Ariadne Makridakis Arroyo (she/they) is a Los Angeles-based poet, writer, and femenista of Greek and Guatemalan descent. Their work has been featured in Stellium Literary Magazine, Stonecoast Review, Latin@ Literatures, and Tasteful Rude, and she was awarded the 2025 LGBTQIA+ residency fellowship with The Sundress Academy for the Arts.

Exhibition Opening | Catharsis by Clumsy World

GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES

CATHARSIS (noun) : the process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions

What does it mean to find catharsis? Some go to the cinema, others the gym, maybe a ceramic studio or the beach. No matter what avenue we take, it is imperative that every human find a way to process their emotions. For Genna BloomBecker, this comes through every aspect of her art practice ~ from creating intricate makeup looks to fusing glass and capturing her environment on film. Art and emotions are inextricably linked, and there is a poignancy that occurs when we let go of our fears and dive into the waters of being seen *exactly* as we are, complications, contradictions and all.

Since 2021, Genna BloomBecker has been sharing her artistry through the brand clumsy world. Creating fused glass jewelry in her home, combining it with her atmospheric imagery through printed materials and social media, the brand has allowed Genna to express herself in an authentic and heartfelt way. Popping up at markets in Los Angeles and the Bay Area has expanded the clumsy community, enveloping all who find themselves in the bright colors, fun shapes, and general positivity that Genna’s booth exudes.

In this exhibit, clumsy world comes to life through the viscerality of the physical gallery space. From film photography prints to upcycled, mixed media art pieces, fused glass treasures + more, Genna will explore the theme of catharsis through her uniquely multifaceted approach.

Genna BloomBecker is a multidisciplinary artist with creative exploration at her core. She has an intuition-led practice that spans the disciplines of film photography, fused glass jewelry design, upcycling, modeling, and creative collaboration. Genna is heavily inspired by color, texture, and environmental synchronicities; the grooves in a canyon wall, the way glass transforms through the fusing process, the magic of a double exposure photograph taken by two different people.

Genna’s work is grounded in the acknowledgment of nature’s wonder, the determination to bring positivity to the world, and the normalization and attention to mental health and healing throughout the artistic process. Her work is vivid and inviting, with a propensity towards the ethereal. Genna embraces experimental processes and will forever prefer the magic of analog techniques over the often overwhelming possibilities of technology. She lives with her wife and three cats on Chumash, Tongva + Kizh land (AKA Los Angeles).
