Fantasma | Exhibition Opening by Susan Aparicio and Monica Juarez

GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | Fantasma brings together the work of Susan Aparicio and Monica Juarez, who both turn to childhood and nostalgia as sites of play and unease. Aparicio reimagines family photographs as connect-the-dots chain drawings, where figures and icons are both present and missing altogether. Juarez’s ceramic tiles draw from pop culture and fairytales, exposing the soft promises of nostalgia and the haunting reach of capitalism. Together, their works treat memory as a ghostly companion.

Susan Aparicio is a southeast LA native and a visual artist playing in the mediums of stained glass and installation. Her work melds the vibrancy of Latinidad and pop culture with the heartache and sense of humor that raised her in the age of the internet and instant consumerism. Exploring the allure of past technologies with contemporary reflections, she highlights the complex relationship between memory, existence, and the ever-evolving digital landscape in our natural world. She earned her MFA in Art from UCLA in 2022. She is currently based in Pasadena, CA.

Monica Juarez is an artist from the San Fernando Valley based in Reseda, CA. She works in soft sculpture, ceramics, performance, and video to reflect upon grief, nostalgia, and futurism. Her work is an active archive of how places, memory, and objects change. Inflatable castles and ceramics become stages for fairytales, mythology, and portals to celestial sites healing and transmuting the wounds of history. She is interested in using sci-fi, horror, and art history as a lens to explore topics like climate change and the absurdity of capitalism. She received her BA in Art at UCLA in 2021.

All Roads Lead to Punk

READING | FREE | ALL AGES | You’re invited to the launch of the much anticipated release of the memoir All Roads Lead to Punk. This event will have a reading, a moderated Q&A with your host Eden Hain and a book signing with a limited edition matching bookmark. You can click here to pre-order your copy of All Roads Leads to Punk in advance.

As a founding member of one of Los Angeles’ earliest female-led bands, BACKSTAGE PASS, Genevieve Schorr lived and breathed rock’n roll growing up like a lot of teenagers at the time. What set her apart was forging her unique band so early in the punk timeline (a direct shot from her glam & pub rock influences) and eventually evolving her life into becoming a professional rock’n roll stylist to the stars. Genny’s book reads like a lost diary trapped in a punk house time capsule from the era, complete with tales of dereliction and unsuspecting victories along the way. Crossing paths with such wildly diverse characters such as The Screamers, The Mumps, Dr. Feelgood, The Damned, The Quick, Jon Stewart, Jim Carrey, The Bangles, and Linda Ronstadt, All Roads Lead To Punk is an invigorating flash through a wild life not to be forgotten. This book comes also with a limited edition BACKSTAGE PASS 7″ single featuring the original 1977 studio recordings of “Legend (Come On Up To Me)” (immortalized by Redd Kross’s version in Desperate Teenage Lovedolls).

Genny Schorr got her start in music in a mostly female band that helped launch punk club, The Masque. Two years later, after meeting Antoinette Laumer, who was a Rock ‘n Roll clothing designer, she found a new calling as a wardrobe stylist. Together, they both opened and co-owned LA clothing store, Strait Jacket, along with Jake Riviera of Stiff Records. When the shop closed in 1983, Genny began a 10-year career as an independent wardrobe stylist and landed a gig with Linda Ronstadt after a chance meeting at a Tom Petty concert. She worked and lived with Linda Ronstadt for the next four years and dressed her for the Get Closer summer tour as well as a trilogy of albums and videos in collaboration with The Nelson Riddle Orchestra for What’s New, Lush Life, and For Sentimental Reasons.

In 1993, she left the business to pursue a career in the health industry for two decades. In 2018 she reunited with Backstage Pass and recently rebooted her career as a wardrobe stylist. Her memoir chronicles her Rock ‘n Roll journey based on some of her performances with storytelling show, Our Lips Unsealed produced by her bandmate, Marina Muhlfriedel. She currently resides in Los Angeles.

The gallery portion includes animation art such as stills from films, character designs, storyboards and other production materials. Forged in Fire | Held in Love Book Release

READING | $10 // $30 | ALL AGES | Join us in celebrating the release of Forged in Fire | Held in Love — a collection born from the ashes of injustice and shaped by the warmth of community. This is more than a book launch; it’s a gathering space for anyone who’s ever been scorched by life’s trials and found their way to joy. Featuring a powerful art installation on beauty through pain, live performances by NOMAD the Poet, and opening words from Camari Hawkins of Mama's Kitchen Press.

Book description: Forged in Fire | Held in Love is a transformative poetry collection that provides readers with a blueprint and firsthand account of what healing truly looks and feels like, resonating with anyone who is navigating their own healing journey. Specifically tailored for women, BIPOC individuals, the LGBTQIA+ community, people with disabilities, and trauma survivors, Forged in Fire | Held in Love fearlessly addresses a wide spectrum of traumas that include generational, familial, systemic, childhood, sexual, and racial experiences. It serves as a war cry for liberation, speaking directly to burdened souls, inquisitive minds, generational cycle breakers, and those brave enough to embark on unconventional paths.

Club Gay Gardens | August 2025

WORKSHOP | FREE | ALL AGES | Garden with us! On the last Sunday of every month our besties Maggie Smart-McCabe and Linnea Torres lead a workshop/volunteer session actively tending to our Native Garden. Learn about plants native to southern California, how to care for them, and meet other cuties while helping sustain our very own Junior High garden!

Bring your own water bottle and snacks. All are welcome! Absolutely no experience necessary.

We also HIGHLY recommend hats + SPF to stay safe from the sun.

Maggie Smart-McCabe has experience working in climate appropriate gardens that prioritize native plants, regenerative gardening, and building soil health. They are passionate about increasing access to green spaces where people can get hands-on experience connecting to land and plants in their own community. Maggie loves gardening and learning in community spaces, and they are super excited to show plants some love with other queer folks at the Junior High Native Plant Garden!

Linnea Torres is a photographer and has been gardening for two years, after leaving the life of 35mm. A self-proclaimed master of container gardening, Linnea focuses on her tiny patio in her tiny space. Her tiny patio is home to edible annuals, perennial pollinators, veggies + fruits, the odd succulent, and cut flowers to gift to friends. Her focus has just shifted to growing art. Linnea is excited to share DIY tips for gardening as well as a deep appreciation for growing your own food. Let’s learn together y’all!
