⤏ A PLAYLIST FOR YOUR INNER CHILD
⤏ CURATED BY OLIVE KLUG

I’ll tell you a secret I’ve never revealed; however we are is okay”

—Judee Sill, “ Lopin’ Along Through the Cosmos”

What is the theme of your playlist?

The theme of this playlist is trying to conjure the magic of the first days of spring that I felt as a child. The playlist is meant to make you feel like a little kid in early April, noticing that the days are getting warmer, the flowers are blooming, and that the fairies have returned to your backyard. I tried to include a lot of twinkly folk music, much of which was recorded and written in the 60’s and 70’s to conjure that nostalgic feeling.

Why did you select these songs?

I picked any song that reminded me of what it was like to be a child in early Spring and Summer. Some I picked based on the general feeling they created, and others I picked due to the lyrical content. I also created this playlist loosely based on a song I’m releasing on April 14, called Casting Spells, about bringing your childlike sense of wonder into your adult life. “Fairies in the Backyard” is actually a quote from that song!

What’s one song you wish you wrote?

That Summer Feeling - Jonathan Richman

You get to spend a day with three artists. Who are they and what are you doing?

Well, a couple of the artists are my real life friends! I would spend the day with Enny Owl, Philip Labes, and Ashley Virginia (the three artists I know in person). I think we would maybe have a picnic and sing some songs together to celebrate spring.

You can only listen to one artist for the rest of your life. Who would it be?

Joni Mitchell or Taylor Swift. Really hard to decide between those two.

What is your most frequently played song/album?

Probably Blue by Joni Mitchell or Folklore by Taylor Swift.

If your life were a movie, what 5 songs would be on the soundtrack?

I know way too many songs, so I’ll just pick 5 songs from this playlist specifically. This would be a movie specifically about my childhood, not my whole life I’d say.

Solitary Daughter - Bedouine

Cattails - Big Thief

Nostalgia - Uwade

Little bit of Rain - Karen Dalton

That Summer Feeling - Jonathan Richman

These 5 songs perfectly sum up my childhood. I was an only child growing up in Portland, Oregon. So Solitary Daughter and Little Bit of Rain feel very directly related. That Summer Feeling and Nostalgia are also very fitting because I was a very wistful and reflective child. Finally, there were Cattails growing in the pond at my parents house and they were my favorite plants in my backyard!

What’s a song everyone needs to listen to?

From this playlist, The Trees are Alive by Michael Melvin. Such an underrated song and artist!

What’s the most underrated song/band/artist out there right now?

An acquaintance of mine, Hope DeLuca is an incredible writer and singer. Everyone should go listen to her stuff.

What do you think Rihanna named her baby?

Rhi-”ah”nna; the way everyone mispronounces her name.
