Clay Date! Pots for Pot Heads

  • Junior High, Incorporated 603 South Brand Boulevard Glendale, CA, 91204 United States (map)

WORKSHOP | $25 | ALL AGES | Celebrate 420 early with this Pot themed event! Join Exhibiting Artist Sebastián Montes-Schiff, for a 4hr hands-on ceramics workshop where you'll learn how to craft your own smokeable plant pot! This unique piece functions as both a planter and a fully functional smoking device, seamlessly blending artistry with utility. We'll cover hand-building techniques, airflow design, and safety considerations to ensure both you and your plant thrive.

Great for those who are looking for access to ceramics, clay friends, or sharpening your skill set! No experience necessary. No reservations are necessary to attend Clay Date. You are welcome to purchase your ticket ahead of time or at the door day-of the event.

You will receive an email 1-2 months after the class letting you know your pots have been fired and are ready to pick up. You can pick up your pieces Monday/Tuesday or at any Clay Date. Everyone will have up to three months to pick up their pots- after which we will have to dispose of them to make space for new class work!

Email claydate@juniorhighla.com for any further questions pertaining to Clay Date!

The “Puro Tranquilo, Puro Sereno,” exhibition is a love letter to El Sereno, the neighborhood that shaped solo exhibiting artist, Sebastian Schiff. With our rolling hills and tight knit community, El Sereno truly embodies its name, which translates to The Tranquil or The Serene. Through ceramic sculptures, Sebastian honors the spaces that define his community—the local taco truck, the corner store, and the everyday landmarks that hold the weight of history, memory, and identity.

Sebastian is a Mexican-American, self-taught ceramic artist born in Los Angeles, driven by a deep connection to the earth and a passion for the tactile process of working with clay. For him, ceramics is not just a craft—it is a therapeutic practice that allows expression of personal journey, exploring themes of growth, nature, plants, and community, and connecting with the world. His work is inspired by lived experiences, dreams, city, culture, and the natural world, with each piece reflecting an intimate relationship with the material and the earth. His work blends functional and artistic elements, is rooted in a desire to create objects that not only serve a purpose but also invite contemplation and connection. Teaching others is a natural extension of his practice—sharing the joy, healing, and fulfillment he finds in ceramics with others has become a vital part of my creative journey.

Sliding scale pricing is a tool for social equity. We use sliding scale pricing to make ceramics education accessible and affordable to all. There are three tiers for pricing, when signing up for a workshop, please pay on the scale what feels right to you and your current finances. This is a trust based system, only you will know what feels comfortable and possible.

The high end of the scale is the true cost. If you are someone who can afford to pay this, please do, as this offsets the price for others, allowing us to create more affordable offerings. There are a set amount of spaces available per tier to ensure that the scale is balanced and workshop costs are covered. If a tier is sold out it means that all those spots have been spoken for.

We do our best to ensure workshops are accessible and affordable. We are continuously improving our pricing system, please reach out if you have any questions or ideas you'd like to share.

COVID-19 vaccinations are highly recommended to attend events at Junior High. Learn more here.

This event will be indoors.
