ART OPENING | $5 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | An ode to traditional art, “For Art’s Sake” invites guests to go to 1800’s France for a night, exploring a world existing categorically for form over function. The phrase “for art’s sake” alludes to the early French philosophy that defines art as a force “divorced from didactic, political, and utilitarian function.”
Painters Hannah Kline and Michelle Miralles create works that metabolize external environments to bear fruits of beauty and expression. Using art as an escape from identity politics, objectivity, and utilitarian function, Hannah and Michelle‘s “For Art’s Sake” delivers a fantastical, utopic, and dream-like universe existing both ahead of and before its time.
HANNAH KLINE is a multimedia visual artist living in Los Angeles, California. Through drawing, painting, and collaging, Hannah is most interested in capturing what is felt but not seen. Hannah’s work functions as a form of escapism, although it takes small doses of reality with it.
Born in Altamonte Springs, Florida , Hannah studied studio art with a focus on drawing at the University of Florida. After moving to Los Angeles, she began exhibiting her work in galleries and pop-up shows. Hannah enjoys experimenting with diverse materials to maximize variation, texture, and dimensionality. With the ability to use these methods and materials to improvise unique and interesting forms, the content of Hannah’s work often feels intuitive, blooming before her own eyes. Her curiosity in subjects such as science, entropy, and natural landscapes find residence in these improvised compositions.
MICHELLE MIRALLES is a visual artist living in the High Desert of southern California. Born in Torrance, California, Michelle studied studio art with an emphasis in painting at the University of Florida. She currently works with wet, dry, and digital media but continues to experiment with other materials such as fabric and thread.
Michelle's chosen medium is oil paint but she often experiments with different application techniques — creating various textures and depths to her paintings. Her interests expand into the world of geology, botany, and art history which often present themselves in her work. Michelle's artistic approach confronts the relationship she has with the external world against the inner workings of her mind. Through various strokes and dream-like washes, Michelle immerses the viewer into her own world.
