OPENING | greetings from somewhere by kara vorabutr

  • Junior High, Incorporated 603 South Brand Boulevard Glendale, CA, 91204 United States (map)

ART OPENING | SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | Kara Vorabutr is a multi-disciplinary artist, documenting her experiences with foreign spaces through photography, food, prose, and design.

“greetings from somewhere” — her first solo exhibition — celebrates her photographic archive, recalling timeless moments in thoughtful remembrance. The exhibition immerses you in Kara’s own visual memoir, and calls you into its stillness. “greetings from somewhere” explores the balance between romanticism and realism, as her subjects coexist somewhere between softness and concrete grain.

FOREWARD FROM THE ARTIST —

I want you to reimagine romance with me.

Be voyeuristic and intrusive as a tourist, yet always with the innocence and wonder of being a stranger in a strange land. As we migrate in movement, I hope that we find comfort in familiarity, and hold colors dear.

Will the people of an island that only accommodates 30 permanent residents miss you? Probably not. But the little girl staring out at its harbors will miss it and the taste of homemade aioli one day. Maybe tomorrow when summer is over. The magician will have a different audience, but the joy brought will stay the same, and the rose perfectly balanced on his nose will have faded. The leathery old man’s tan still needs to be maintained, for it is not of permanence after the sun goes and the days shorten.

To swim in city hall’s fountain on a warm evening without arrest just past midnight. To feel jealousness over a humble boat the size of a casket that is all at once a home, a grave, and a bed. A dead swan, a soft swing of sun-bleached curtains in the breeze, and always a deadline. To the many heads that laid before mine and after on temporary pillows – yesterday, last week, tomorrow have no less let my bones rest with comfortability and that hopefully, the sea charm I’ve purchased from the morning fish market at the old port will not run out of luck anytime soon.

As of August 2021, Junior High requires masks indoors at all times. COVID-19 vaccinations are mandatory to attend events. Proof must be available upon request. You may access your Digital Vaccination Record here.
