GALLERY | $5—$15 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | We are currently in a Risograph Renaissance! Loved for its hyper-pigmented colors this lightning-fast, cost-effective form of printing has taken on a second life. Originally from the early 80s, Risograph use has resurged within the last decade. Riso — originating from Japan — translates to “ideal.”
Inspired by it’s vibrant color economy, LA-based illustrator and printmaker Natalie Center (Printed Pony) has spent that last three years researching Risograph color theory. Natalie hopes to demystify printmaking and inspire others to push Riso’s fluorescent inks to their overlay limit. She produced the Center Color Testing System — a buildable book featuring over 50 two-color Riso palettes and an expanding roster of palettes utilizing three-colors. Bound with Chicago screws, this resource is designed to fit the needs of the individual. With pages sold individually or in packs, users can build a book that reflects the colors they have access to.
In this show, 25 artists have each been paired up with a different three-color palette. Each artist has created an original print that captures the vibrancy of their unique color trio. Each one-of-a-kind print will be available for purchase, with 75% of the sales going to a charity selected by the artist.
Natalie first fell in love with Riso printing working at zine fests and print fairs. Through its vibrancy and quirky misregistration, Natalie learned to honor imperfections and the endless possibilities of color. Based out of Echo Park, Natalie finds inspiration in flora, fauna, food, positivity, and the power of cuteness.
