Pitch Clinic | Teach-In

  • Shopify Los Angeles (Building 1, Unit 100) 777 South Alameda Street Los Angeles, CA, 90021 United States (map)

WORKSHOP | FREE | ALL AGES | Junior High x Shopify’s monthly "Teach-In" series is a revitalization of the 60s movement by the same name. Teach-Ins dissect entrepreneurial topics, while prioritizing participation, practicality, and accessibility. Once a month, Junior High and Shopify will host different facilitators across various industries.

This April, Makeda Easter will be facilitating this teach-in on journalism. In journalism, there is a major difference between a topic and a story. We will talk about the elements that make up a story and explore the different types of stories an editor looks for to publish. By the end of this workshop, participants should be able to:

Identify outlets that might publish your work
Understand the pitching process and what happens after pitching
Identify various methods for sharing their stories
Practice and refine your story pitch

Teach-Ins will be held at the Shopify storefront in Downtown Los Angeles. There is accessible parking on-site with validation. Featuring coffee courtesy of Go Get Em Tiger.

About the Facilitator: Makeda Easter is a freelance journalist. Her work has been recognized with an Online Journalism Award and several L.A. Press Club Awards. Previously, she has written for the LA Times and currently is establishing The Art Rebellion: a digital space that will publish interviews with artists of all types who are working to create change in their communities. The Art Rebellion will also offer workshops and more. Makeda is a Texan at heart, and also obsessed with all things movement-related. When she's not writing, you can usually find her in a dance studio or at a local tennis court rollerskating.
