What's the theme of your playlist?
EMILY MASSEY: This playlist was made for me by my best friend Carina. We have been best friends since junior high after we met in orchestra class in the 6th grade. So it felt fitting to apply it here :) They have amazing taste in music and they introduce me to so much stuff I would have never found on my own. I love this playlist and I think you all will too!
"Carina Phone 1000" is the only song on the album that is not a one word title. Was that intentional?
The person discussed above is the titular Carina from this song. It wasn’t exactly intentional to have all the songs except this one as one word titles. The song is about a time that they called me right at a time I needed it, when they really saved me from myself. Their contact name in my phone is Carina Phone 1000 because they have lost their phone a million times so I have a million different phone numbers saved under their name. Carina Phone 1000 is the most recent iteration. I thought about naming the song just Carina to stay within the one word titles, but it felt more true to the song to have it as the longer version.
What is your favorite lyric on Yard? (Personally obsessed with "I wanna catch myself this time like I know that I'm the prize."
Thank you so much! I do really love the lyrics to that song fishes, but my favorite lyric I think is from the song Yard where I say “missed the volleyball game, I’m a bitch” The song yard is a bit more confessional and includes direct storytelling than I usually do in my lyrics. It's so fun to play that song live. Everyone screams I'm a bitch back and it is so fun.
You spent some time alone to write the songs featured on Yard. Do you think you would have been as vulnerable on Yard if you weren't isolated?
The alone time I was privileged enough to experience during the making of this record was so special. It was hard. I think there were a lot of things that I put off from processing, but being alone like that makes it impossible to avoid. It was something I didn’t know I needed. I was so much more open with myself. I let myself emote in ways I hadn’t maybe ever. The songwriting really is just a byproduct of that. I don’t think they would have come out as vulnerable if I didn’t take those trips. It is definitely a practice I am infinitely grateful to continue.
If you could pick any song off Yard to be included in any show/movie which song and what show/movie would it be?
I think slugs would be a great song to go along with a first love scene. Or some type of love lost and refound situation.
