Out On The Ice: A Talk on Queerness in Figure Skating

COMMUNITY |$8 PRE // $12 DOS | ALL AGES | Join us Friday February 20th for a live talk with journalists Ari Saperstein and Chris Schleicher on the hidden history of queerness in figure skating.

From the outside, figure skating looks like a queer refuge. But inside? Skaters have often been expected to fit rigid ideas of gender and performance – on and off the ice. Until surprisingly recently, being fully yourself in the sport felt impossible, especially at the highest levels. Luckily, a few courageous skaters were able to break through and shatter that culture of silence, often in ways that surprised even themselves. Exclusive interviews with Olympic athletes like Adam Rippon and Amber Glenn, Ari and Chris trace the history of skaters who pushed back and the moments that reshaped the visibility of queerness in sport.

(And yes, Heated Rivalry will be discussed.)

Come for the talk, then go home and watch the Olympics a little differently.

Part of ticket proceeds are donated to @‌CHIRLA, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, supporting their ongoing efforts to stand up to ICE.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Ari Saperstein is a contributor to outlets like The Guardian, Vox and NPR and former producer at LAist and This American Life. Chris Schleicher is a TV writer (The Mindy Project, Never Have I Ever, Saved by the Bell), a contributor on figure skating for Slate and TIME, and former national-level figure skater.

This talk is based on a three-part series on queerness in figure skating hosted by Ari & Chris for the critically acclaimed documentary podcast Blind Landing.

The DMST has since been an incubator for his practice in exploring social practice, community building and other art programing. Honoring The Moon: An Online Yoga Nidra Offering

WORKSHOP | $15 | ALL AGES | No traffic! No rush! No stress! No dealing with the incoming rain! A new online Junior High LA at Home offering that is designed with our LA community in mind to minimize time spent in the car while delivering a deeply calming experience for the nervous system in virtual community. Sam will guide you through a 75-minute relaxing and restorative Shamanic Kundalini Yoga (SKY) Nidra journey that will include breathwork, light movement and a calming Nidra meditation to work with the energies of the New Moon. All bodies, genders, experience levels and ages are welcome!

This grounding and peaceful online class is a great way to experience the SKY modality and invite calm and clarity in tune with Nature’s rhythms. Take time outside of the noise after the busyness of your day to go within and get centered from the comfort of your own home. You will experience how everything else flows with more grace and ease when you align with your inner compass and tone the parasympathetic nervous system, which signals to the body that it is welcome to rest, digest and focus in the present.

Sam Paige Davis is a queer and trans writer, teacher and artist who combines the SKY modality with over a decade of experience teaching LAST CUT® writing workshops. They love supporting people in regulating their nervous systems, remembering their innate wholeness and unlocking their unique creativity.

Wear comfortable clothing for movement. In addition to a yoga mat, please have any blankets or pillows nearby for comfort during the Nidra portion of the practice. Please have your camera on for the first part of class, as this supports our creating community online as well as my ability to guide the group as a whole. Also, please mute yourself when you come into class. Thank you!

Feminist Love Letters

COMMUNITY | $8 | ALL AGES | We invite participants of all ages to join us anytime between 5-7pm to create a love letter to their favorite feminist. We will provide papers, pens, and stickers to accommodate your epistolary declarations.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of FLL, a project founded by Sara Ellen Fowler @‌saraellenfowler and Cindy Rehm @‌cindyrehm. We will document your letter and add it to our archive of letters at http://feministloveletters.tumblr.com and @‌femnistloveletters.

In 1971 artist Nancy Spero sent critic Lucy Lippard a letter with the simple but impassioned message: “The enemies of women’s liberation in the arts will be crushed. Love Nancy.” This note serves as the inspiration for Feminist Love Letters, a project that invites participants to profess their love, send words of support and encouragement, or unleash their feminist fury in a letter to a contemporary or historic feminist.

1000 Afros Still Loitering For Beauty | An Exhibition Opening

GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | The 18 pieces by Marantz Moon in “1000 Afros Still Loitering 4 Beauty” represent a body of work at the intersection of function, the utilitarian and an aesthetic informed by the beauty of daily life in a broad spectrum of the black community.  The iconic image of the afro, whether replicated throughout the exhibition as a silhouette, by its implied presence (as in the form of an afro pick), or in actual figurative form, serves as a pointer, directing the viewer to experience the afro uniquely in the context of each new setting, within each new work, as a symbol of both black beauty and black power.

The exhibition title is a reference to the increased incidence of racially-motivated policing in gentrifying neighborhoods over “loitering”.  While laws governing “loitering” first appeared in Elizabethan England, their current deployment by American police is a means to control conflicted spaces. The artist asks us to question, Whose space is it?  With “(this corner is a safe space?),” the artist creates both an exterior where afro cutouts replicate and manifest in unconscious racial stereotypes as an “unruly mob” in the eyes of gentrifiers, but also as interior space that represents a safe haven within which to celebrate black life and culture.

Written by Lenore French, President & Founding Member of Transformation Arts

Moon’s work centers on Afro silhouettes, emphasizing flow and movement. He uses a variety of mediums, including acrylic, resin, clay, and found materials, layering color, texture, and abstraction to create depth. Inspired by his own identity and culture, his art invites viewers to pause and reflect. Through his practice, he explores the transient nature of life, aiming to freeze moments in time and spark thoughtful engagement.

Marantz Moon is a practicing visual, performance and teaching artist. He is currently based in Los Angeles, CA, where he has lived for the past 5 years since relocated from his hometown of Chicago IL, in early 2020. In that time, Moon co-founded the DMST Atelier, an artist-run gallery space in Mid-City, with fellow artist Frannie Hemmelgarn in 2021. The DMST has since been an incubator for his practice in exploring social practice, community building and other art programing. Moon has a B.A in Art from Grambling State University & M.A in Studio Art from Governors State University. He currently works in fine art installation and as an adjunct art professor teaching art education and social justice courses at Cal State Fullerton.
