Exhibition Opening | Miscelánea Divina, by Angela Divina
GALLERY | $5-10 SUGGESTED DONATION | ALL AGES | “Miscelánea Divina” is a reimagination of my life on the United States-Mexico border. Growing up in Northern Mexico, I was impacted by political and commercial art and its powerful hold on local communities. In a time when it has become increasingly difficult to separate commodities from their imposed political affiliations, I often wonder how companies influence our existence and skew our perception of cultural heritage and identity.
Within the last year, CEMEX (a Mexican multinational building materials company, headquartered in San Pedro Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico) has set up an excavation site in South Phoenix across from my home. Their presence occupies space that could have otherwise been used for community parks, grocery stores, or other amenities my neighborhood lacks. Inspired by what is becoming a company town, the work in this series investigates our land use, consumption, and commodification of resources.
Miscelánea is the Spanish term for a collection of miscellaneous objects or, more specifically, a neighborhood store selling assorted goods and groceries, typically named after the families that owned them. If this exhibition is my collection of miscellaneous art objects, which company town would Miscelánea Divina belong to?
Angela Divina is a Mexican-American artist whose practice combines traditional art mediums with ready-made materials onto large-format mixed media paintings. By juxtaposing commercial design imagery with regional folk art, her work critiques the commodification of land, culture, and resources, and its impact on identity politics. Divina’s upbringing between the Southwestern United States and Northern-Central Mexico is reflected in her subject matter, often including domestic goods, commercial product logos, political advertisements, and native landscapes typical of the region.
Divina was born in Los Angeles, California, and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California Institute of the Arts in 2018. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries, including the Los Angeles LGBT Center and the Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego. Divina’s work has also been featured commercially in Target’s line of HeyDay electronic accessories. She currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona, and is an advocate for desert preservation.

Out On The Ice: A Talk on Queerness in Figure Skating
COMMUNITY |$8 PRE // $12 DOS | ALL AGES | Join us Friday February 20th for a live talk with journalists Ari Saperstein and Chris Schleicher on the hidden history of queerness in figure skating.
From the outside, figure skating looks like a queer refuge. But inside? Skaters have often been expected to fit rigid ideas of gender and performance – on and off the ice. Until surprisingly recently, being fully yourself in the sport felt impossible, especially at the highest levels. Luckily, a few courageous skaters were able to break through and shatter that culture of silence, often in ways that surprised even themselves. Exclusive interviews with Olympic athletes like Adam Rippon and Amber Glenn, Ari and Chris trace the history of skaters who pushed back and the moments that reshaped the visibility of queerness in sport.
(And yes, Heated Rivalry will be discussed.)
Come for the talk, then go home and watch the Olympics a little differently.
Part of ticket proceeds are donated to @CHIRLA, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights, supporting their ongoing efforts to stand up to ICE.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
Ari Saperstein is a contributor to outlets like The Guardian, Vox and NPR and former producer at LAist and This American Life. Chris Schleicher is a TV writer (The Mindy Project, Never Have I Ever, Saved by the Bell), a contributor on figure skating for Slate and TIME, and former national-level figure skater.
This talk is based on a three-part series on queerness in figure skating hosted by Ari & Chris for the critically acclaimed documentary podcast Blind Landing.

In 1971 artist Nancy Spero sent critic Lucy Lippard a letter with the simple but impassioned message: “The enemies of women’s liberation in the arts will be crushed. Learn pinch, coil, and slab techniques with our resident clay artist Shea Smelser (@sheasmelser ) for a loosely guided hand building class. No experience is necessary. Tickets for Clay Date will also be available at the door day-of the event.
Option to pay $10 to fire your artwork at the end of the class. If you opt to fire your work, you will receive an email once your pots have been bisque fired and are ready to pick up. You can pick up your pieces on Mondays or at any Clay Date. To glaze your work, purchase another Clay Date ticket to receive access to the glazes and for the last firing. You will have up to two months to pick up/glaze your works – after which we will have to dispose of them to make space for new class work.
