⤏ A PLAYLIST FOR LOVING YOURSELF
⤏ CURATED BY
RALPH

“Everybody wants the best for you but you gotta want it for yourself, my love”

—LORDE, “SECRETS FROM A GIRL (WHO’S SEEN IT ALL)”

What is the theme of your playlist?

The playlist theme is self-love/mental health narratives.

Why did you select these songs?

I’ve been talking a lot about my own mental health journey lately, since Pain Relief is about a time last year when I felt really depressed and stuck. I was in LA and I would force myself to go for runs, blasting my favorite songs and trying to soak up as much Vitamin D as possible. It’s crazy how much a good playlist helped me when I needed some positivity. Listening to other artists sing about their own shit made me feel less alone, it’s so nice to hear lyrics that are relatable and emotional and honest.

What’s one song you wish you wrote?

Runner’s High by MUNA is a great song. I love how they manipulate the common expression into a story about mental health and the ending of a relationship. The line about “paint the walls a different color” really speaks to me, because we all know that feeling - when you’re feeling anxious or sad so you start rearranging furniture or cutting your hair. I also LOVE the intensity of the production, it kinda comes out of nowhere and feels explosive. It’s actually a wicked song to run to, feels very powerful.

You get to spend a day with three artists. Who are they and what are you doing?

Ooh hard. Cher, because she’s a badass and doesn’t take shit and although I sort of fear her, I also aspire to be more like her. I feel like she’ll last forever, plus she’s so multi-talented (I recently re-watched Burlesque and that shit SLAPS).  Stevie Nicks because she’s one of my biggest influences and I think she’s probably an amazing story teller - I want to sit next to her in front of a roaring fireplace with a warm blanket and listen to her tell tales in her crackly voice. And Charli XCX - ‘Crash’  was a huge album for me, I listened to it non stop while I was writing my own EP. I feel like Charli is a powerhouse and I admire how hard she pushes and continues to evolve as an artist, I think we’d have a lot to talk about and I could learn from her. Plus I just think we’d really get along.

You can only listen to one artist for the rest of your life. Who would it be?

Joni Mitchell.

What is your most frequently played song/album?

Right now I’m absolutely rinsing Jaded by Miley Cyrus. Me and my girlfriend are very much enjoying screaming it out the window while driving in Toronto

If your life were a movie, what 5 songs would be on the soundtrack?

Rainy Days and Mondays - The Carpenters

Wannabe - The Spice Girls

Anxiety - Megan Thee Stallion

Just Got Paid - Sigala, Ella Eyre, Meghan Trainor, French Montana

I Kissed a Girl - Katie Perry

Nothing’s Gonna Keep Me Down - Yellow Days

What’s a song everyone needs to listen to?

Akanamali by Sun-El Musician and Samthing Soweto. My producer Giordan sent it to me months ago because he knew I’d love the production and…he was correct. The way they gradually add elements into the song as they go is wild, it’s really really good.

What’s the most underrated song/band/artist out there right now?

…Me :)

What do you think Rihanna named her baby?

Denim
